Excellent food and service!

My sister and I took my mother to Lord Gore Restaurant for her Birthday based on reviews on tripadvisor. We wanted to do a tasting menu with wine parings which is not something they usually offer. I spoke with food and beverage manager Michael Hodges who worked with the chef to arrange this for us. We ended up with a delicious 6 course meal. The food and wine parings were exceptional , the protion sizes were perfect, and Michale waited on us personally. We had an excellent table right by the window, however the dining room is small and every table has a great view of the mountians. My mother had a great time and we will be back next time we are in Vail! I would highly recommend contacting Michale for your special occasion.

Small but beautiful place with excellent food

I have been searching the web for a nice, quiet restaurant with good food for our special family reunion. Based on the limited comments (all positive) on Tripadvisor, we decided that it is worth a try. We made the reservation for eight of us (six adults and two children 7 and 3+). We requested a table with a good view. When we arrived, we realized that almost all tables have an excellent view of the mountain. The service was a little slow which did not bother us at all. It gave us the time to chat. We ordered two appetizers and two chilled plates for starters. The scallop appetizer was very flavorful, and the shrimp appetizer was of large size but a little salty and dry for our taste. The two chilled plates (watermelon and beets) were both wonderful. We ordered five different entries (2 racks of lamb, 1 halibut, 1 tuna, 1 salmon, and 1 duck), of which lamb, halibut and duck were all excellent. The salmon and tuna were a little overcooked but still good. I am a lamb lover and the small order of rack of lamb was one of the best that I ever had. Since I eat light in the evenings, the size of the small order was actually a little more than I expected but I ate it all. Our daughter-in-law had the full-size order of rack of lamb which was more than she could eat so she shared a portion with our son. The two children had pasta and we ordered shrimp with the pasta. They both loved their dinner. For desserts, we had banana foster, banana split and chocolate decadence. Banana foster was unique and good, but the banana split offered the best value. The chocolate decadence was very rich but not that special. Overall, we had a wonderful evening with excellent food. Just a note, the restaurant got quite busy after eight o?clock in the evening because many customers came in after the orchestra performance. We would suggest earlier dinner if someone prefers quiet surroundings. Well, we definitely would go back and enjoy this not very well advertised restaurant again.

A gorgeous view with remarkable food

We've lived (part time) in Vail since summer of 1999...have tried all of the best known restaurants in the valley. We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful options. We had not been to Lord Gore since before Manor Vail's renovation a few years ago. We went last night for a special evening out (after our house guests had returned home). We sat at a table in the center of a massive 2 story window that encompassed the entire mountain-facing side of the room. The view alone is breath-taking. Our experience has been that food can be disappointing in"view restaurants"...Lord Gore is an exception! Our meal was outstanding in every way! My husband had the watermelon salad...a real standout! I had the beet salad with arugula...wonderful, but the watermelon was so unusual and delicious! The salads were also generous portions. Husband had the duck with "green" mac & cheese...both had a little kick and great flavor! I had the salmon served on a layered bed of mashed potatoes and spinach. It was very flavorful and the perfect portion! I appreciated the fact that there was an option of a 4 oz or 8 oz portion. I was glad I opted for the small serving so that we could share the bananas foster dessert. It is served over ice cream in a caramelized sugar bowl. The perfect ending to a remarkable meal! We are already planning our return visits.

Why is this restaurant ignored?

Maybe because it's quiet and civilized, with enormously comfortable chairs and a huge attractive fireplace facing 25 foot high windows that overlook the mountain at the Golden Peak end of town. Maybe because it's not in the center of Lionshead or Vail Village (it was a little difficult to find at night, Vail is not well lit). Maybe because it's not a cheap meal for those on this site searching for same. In any event, it deserves more attention on this site than it gets. Vail regulars tell us they've been going for years. It was our first time and we loved it. Food presentation was excellent and so were the tastes and textures. I had the elk loin which was deliciously combined with polenta, spinach, and a huge onion ring. My wife had a very fine salmon dish. Our waiter, Gavin (he runs the show, all the guests who came in seemed to know him) was very attentive and friendly. He recommended the bananas foster for desert. We didn't regret it, though my waist line probably did. We're not sure why this restaurant comes in under the radar on Trip Advisor. Make no mistake: in many cities, this restaurant would be at the top of the heap. Yes, it's expensive like so many restaurants in Vail. But once you get used to Vail prices, this restaurant does not disappoint. And, after all, you ain't eating pizza or going to an ordinary chop house. $100 for two with a glass of wine, entree, appetizers, a split dessert, tip and the outrageous Vail tax. Worth every penny.

Never leave Vail without a meal here

Small dining room with high ceilings, wall of windows facing the mountain, beautiful wood paneling, and fireplace... We were also fortunate to catch a beautiful sunset. My parents visited the restaurant on their trips to Vail in the 70's and we continue to visit every time we vacation in Vail. We enjoyed impecable service and meals. We chose the filet and veal. Both were very good. Never been disappointed in 30 or so years! Also, 25% discount if you dine early.
