Traveler Reviews

Once again, wonderful

August 2010. I go to this restaurant regularly, year to year. Again, I had an excellent meal. The corn chowder was extra special, with the rich puree of the corn chowder accented by a touch of cilantro and jalapeno. The interpretation of the linguini carbonara was also interesting and successful. The dessert, a pound cake with sauted peaches was perfect - a light cake with peaches that were not overly sweet. The wine selection by the glass was ok - a good spectrum and not badly priced, but not special, considering they do have some excellent wines by the bottle. I did not like my first wine selection and the waiter kindly replaced it. The service was good, if a bit fast. I was there for just about an hour, which as a single diner was fine, but I noticed that a number of couples/groups around me were moved along briskly. The reservations person was very accomodating to my timing needs, but maybe that was because I am a regular. As a single person, I was still given a very nice table, not shunted off to the table by the kitchen. Overall, I was very pleased with the experience.

Best Eggs Benedict Ever

My wife and I visited the Farmers Market in Vail Village on Sunday, 8/8/10 and afterward went to Sweet Basil for lunch/brunch. We sere seated promptly near a window on a beautiful sunny day. I ordered the eggs benedict which came with housemade lamb sausage, 2 one hour poached eggs which were incredible and cubed sauteed potatoes, with smoked tomato hollandaise. Amazing.

My favorite restaurant in Vail but watch your bill

Sweet Basil has consistently pleased my taste buds with creative pasta, amazing pea soup, unique salads. I'm a vegetarian and they always send me away smacking my lips. However, the last time we dined at Sweet Basil, $15 was added to our wine tab. Innocent mistake or was the server padding the bill?

Big Mistake!

I've heard many good things about Sweet Basil, but my experience was HORRIBLE! Our waiter couldn't have been more pompous and disinterested in our party. When my sister asked for a black linen napkin, he told her that there were none available, but offered a dirty one from his pocket! He tossed this dirty one on her lap! Really, he did! The food was mediocre at best and quite costly! I got the chicken (upon recommendation) and it was barely room temperature. If I had known, I'd have gone to Russell's or Kelly Liken.

Wonderful (albeit expensive) Dinner in Vail Village

If you sit outside (or near the patio) at Sweet Basil, it is truly wonderful at night, as you can enjoy the quaintness and charm of Vail Village. Everything on the menu is well-prepared, and service is also top-notch, but the entree choices seem relatively limited (although you can never go wrong with salmon, which was incredible!) We have been dining at least once at Sweet Basil when in Vail for the past 15 years, and we have never been disappointed (as the restaurant continues to reign as Vail's upscale, organic fine dining favorite). Try the toffee cake for dessert...it is incredible!
